You may be one of the folks out there questioning how to hypnotise yourself. If so, there are many techniques that can be used successfully. The Betty Erickson method is one of these approaches.
Betty Erickson bases her hypnosis on the belief that human beings think in feelings, sounds and pictures. But what does this signify? Thinking in feelings refers to how humanity react to physical sensations around them. When we hear things, we will think in terms of the sounds that are created within us. And finally, when we think in pictures, we have an internal vision of what we see and imagine. Each human being uses one of these three ways to think much more than they use the other while there are a few that employ all three similarly.
Thanks to the media, hypnosis has tended to get a bit trivialised. A common misconception is that a hypnotise just has to swing a watch in front of someone and they will become hypnotised. In reality, hypnotising someone else has little to do with this sort of action.
Hypnosis involves a very focused and internal method of attitude and concentration. If you have a compliant subject who will relax into the process, they are able to shift attention from the external world into their internal world. When learning how to hypnotise yourself, you are both the hypnotist and the subject.
It is first important to make yourself as comfortable as possible. Sitting up or laying down as long as you are relaxed will do. Most persons prefer to sit lest they fall asleep accidentally. First, begin breathing slowly and evenly and let your mind empty of thoughts.
Fix in your mind how long the hypnosis session will be. For example, you might want to tell yourself that it will last for 15 or 20 minutes. Humans have an interior clock which helps the body to keep track of time. If you don’t believe, recall how you will mostly wake up just before your alarm clock goes off.
It is very important to also be clear about why you are hypnotising yourself. For some people it is just a matter of gaining a feeling of calm. Concentrate on your goal so your unconscious mind will help you to work on this goal while you are in deep meditation. You can also say aloud your reasoning behind this experiment.
To prevent your mind from roving too far, find a couple of things within the room that you can focus on. Small items are key. Find something like key on a shelf, a knot in a wooden shelf or perhaps something like a door knob. Keep your eyes on each of these things for a short while, in turn. Some persons will also verbally say what they are looking at. Repeat this step with three items you can hear and then three sensations you feel. Count down slowly from three to one. This procedure helps you to shift your attention inwards.
Finally, you will want to focus internally on 3 pictures in your mind, then three sounds and internal feelings. Your focus will now be inwards and you should be very relaxed – stay in this state until you think that your time is up. As time goes by, your hypnotic practice will be much easier and you will accomplish deeper states of relaxation. Follow these simple steps and you will have answered the query of how to hypnotise yourself.
